26-27 Sediment Bowl Valve Installation Instructions
In order to insure a good fit between the tapered part of the valve and the taper inside the sediment bowl housing, it is necessary to lap in the valve. Once a good fit is obtained, the valve should be lubricated with aviation fuel valve lubricant. The lapping compound and lubricant are available at Lang’s Old Car Parts under the following part numbers:
| Lapping Compound | TIMESAV-Y |
| Lubricant | 2902LUB |
- Slide the pack nut over the valve stem, install the handle and handle nut. Tighten the handle nut.
- Mix the lapping compound with a little bit of lightweight oil according to the instructions on the package. Apply some lapping compound to the tapered portion of the valve.
- Slide the valve into the sediment bowl housing with the hole in the side of the valve pointing down and tighten the pack nut finger tight.
- While pressing the valve into the sediment bowl, move the handle back and forth.
- Periodically remove the valve and inspect it to see the progress. You will be able to see the area where the contact is being made.
- Apply more lapping compound and continue lapping until good contact is achieved all the way around the valve and over most of the valve surface.
- Clean off the lapping compound from the valve and inside of the sediment bowl.
- Remove the handle nut, the handle and the pack nut from the valve.
- Coat the tapered portion of the valve, and the area where the valve contacts the packing with aviation fuel valve lubricant.
- Install the valve into the sediment bowl. Insure the hole in the side of the valve points down.
- Install the packing into the sediment bowl.
- Install the pack nut and tighten.
- Install the handle, the lock washer and the nut. Tighten the nut.
- Verify that the valve moves freely.
- Install the valve on the car and connect the fuel line. Place a small amount of gasoline in the gas tank and verify that there are no leaks. If there is any indication of a leak, identify the cause and correct immediately. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START OR OPERATE ANY VEHICLE WITH LEAKING FUEL!
- Periodically check the valve to insure that no fuel leaks develop. If a leak is detected, correct it immediately.
Warning!
Due to the condition of the fuel sediment bowl or any number of other reasons it may not be possible to get a good seal that does not leak. Starting or operating a vehicle with leaking fuel can result in fire and injury.
